It's time for another Herbert Erperderp group build.
Your instructions should you choose to accept the mission...
It's a tale as old as time,
Two Rivals meet on the Field of Battle.
A one on one fight to finally reveal who is superior.
They might be friends, or eternal enemies. It doesn't matter in the...
**DUEL!**
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cheesy intro aside, welcome to the **"Duel" Group Build**!
A one-on-one fight between Rivals. People, Weaponry, Vehicles... there are a lot of duels around. We like pitting things against each other, after all.
In this Group Build, portraying one such Rivalry is the goal!
How you want to go about this is up to you. You can enter a Diorama or, if you don't want to do that, enter two or more models as one Entry.
The rivalry you are portraying does have to be explained, of course.
The Group Build starts at the **1st of June, 8:00 CEST** and finishes on the **31st of August, 20:00 CEST**.
Have fun with your Builds! This message will self-destruct....

Duel. Tamiya's Gato class submarine and Japanese sub chaser. 1/700.
In this build I had this in mind almost immediately.
I think it's a lovely little model. Let's have a look at it together... (There's a surprize upcoming...)

It's a neat little image on the front. I always find the images useful when adding those little details...
The Gato class of submarines were built for the United States Navy and launched in 1941–1943. Named after the lead ship of the class, USS Gato, they were the first mass-production U.S. submarine class of World War II.

Gato's name comes from a species of small catshark. Like most other U.S. Navy submarines of the period, ships of the Gato class were given the names of marine creatures.
Thank you Wiki...

On the first long side, we have  the image repeated along with a recipie for kimchii (Actiually, as I don't read Japanese very well, I'm not sure what it says.)

There's a couple more suggestions on the second long side.

The usual purchasing information on the end panels.
Just under four pounds and very just under five dollars. Great value for a couple of weeks modelling.

Paint schemes are found on the underside...

Looking at what's in the box...

Oh look, a model and some instructions...
Opening up the contents and having a look in a little more detail.

Did you notice that there are two of each of the kits....

Let's have a look at the instructions.

From the Tamiya website...

A black and white copy of the box image...

Information about the subjects in both Japanese and English.

Here's the English.

From scalemates...

Looks good for a kit from back in the 80's

There's  a nice little decal sheet.

Ok. Let's get building... Putting the sub hull together...

The afore mentioned sub hull.

Populating the sub hull with stuff..

Waterline...

Full hull.

Two Gato subs showing the variation in perescopes and hull options.

I'll be doing the props later... That'll be something to look out for...

Next up, the Sub chaser...

All prety straight faward and not a lot of cleaning up required. I didn't need to use any filler either.

Two subs and two chasers.

Adding the details.

I'll leave the boats until it painted.

Adding some rigging

And now ladies and gentlemen, 'Duel'... Now, how am I going to display these? I'm certainly not using resin....
A quick visit to the local 100yen shop... (50p, 60c) and buying a clear draw.
I'll put the sub in the draw and the caser on top. The actual draw then can be plaed over the top to protect the chaser.

A layer or two of crumpled foil to give a sence of liveliness to the see.
I used white glue to create a wake...
Painting with shades of dark blue, dark green, black and varnish to give a glossy finish.

Picking out the wave crests in white...

It looks ok to me. I have seen better online but I'm quite satisfied.

Getting up close and personal.

Next up, a sea bed.

Lifting the sub clear of the sea floor.

A bit of colour to the sea bed and we are done.

Taking a step back.

Right! Let's checkout the video...
